Happy New Year
The last year has been crucial for EuCIA from many points of view: organisation, new – and old – initiatives, communication and interactions with sister organisations all over the world. All this has been part of a long-term strategy that we like to summarise with our motto: we know, we show, we grow.

The three major challenges that we have been facing – sustainability, standards and lobbying – have been addressed in so many activities that I can only mention a few: expanding the Ecotool calculator database, organizing the second edition of the sustainability seminar launching a new initiative on recycling/reuse of composites, supporting the CEN initiative to bring composite material into the next upgrade of the Eurocodes, working with the European Commission on circular economy and, last but not least, exchanging information and sharing initiatives with ACMA.

But our expectations for the next year should not solely be about opportunities and challenges. Focusing on achievements only, I believe, may not actually be the best approach. EuCIA's history has shown us that people – perhaps with a little help in direction – are the driving force of our activities. Working with our team has been a wonderful experience in the past years, and I wish to thank them all deeply for their expertise and commitment. Meeting all of our expectations may be largely outside of our control, but having such motivated people working together enormously increases our chances of success.

I hope that we can keep this attitude for a long time ahead. This is, in conclusion, my greatest wish for 2018.

Roberto Frassine
President EuCIA

New processes and data for our Eco Calculator
We are pleased to announce the addition of new thermoplastics data to its Eco Calculator, the online tool which enables composites companies to calculate the environmental impact associated with the production of their products. The Eco Calculator is constantly evolving to meet industry needs and this latest development follows the recent addition of data for core materials for RTM and vacuum infusion processes. Further additions will be announced next year.

Composites and sustainability, the big picture
Sustainability is becoming an ever more compelling argument in the materials selection process. Fibre reinforced polymer composites are strong, lightweight and durable materials which are seeing increasing adoption in the transportation, construction, renewable energy and many other markets. Sustainability in their use phase is often a key driver for the selection of composites over traditional materials.
